January is traditionally a time for reflection, for looking back at the past year and for planning ahead. It’s often at this time that we think about ways to make ourselves and our lives better. But trying to plan ahead when you are stuck in the hustle and bustle of daily life can be a bit tricky, so taking a short break in beautiful surroundings could be the ideal way to pause for thought and reflection.
Booking a long-weekend in one of Gibraltar’s hotels means time to relax, pamper and slow down, time to recharge after the Christmas and New Year festivities. There are a number of beauty salons and fitness studios – both within the hotels and independent from these – offering a variety of health therapies: massages, detox treatments, skin anti-aging treatments, hatha yoga classes and top-to-toe pamper sessions. If you come with your partner, it is also possible to book romantic spa treatments for two – what a great way to rekindle your romance for the year, or perhaps to give a new romance a sparkling start!
Gibraltar also offers opportunities to refresh yourself spiritually as well as physically. There are a number of organisations offering mediation sessions and alternative therapies and a few days’ break could give you the time to sample some of these and make a difference to the way you think and how you live your life.
Then again, you may prefer to give your refresh your mind intellectually and blow away the cobwebs of winter. Gibraltar’s full cultural programme means that you are likely to find events and venues to suit your taste. Fine art galleries, theatres, craft associations teem in town, while tours around the historical sites that the Rock offers can be instructive as well as providing a welcome change to the routine. The Gibraltar Museum offers some splendid opportunities to explore the history of the Rock with special exhibitions dedicated to the Neanderthals and tours to the Gorham Cave complex organised.
Gibraltar offers some ideal opportunities to slow the pace of life down. Its generally mild weather means that January can come with some stunning, clear skies and some agreeable sunshine. It is fresh enough to walk in the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, or to take advantage of the many Rock Tours available, and enjoy some of the Mediterranean coast’s most stunning views: out towards North Africa, Spain and over the Bay and Strait. It is also warm enough to enjoy a relaxing drink at one of Gibraltar’s many cafes, bars and restaurants, either in town, or at one of Gibraltar’s delightful beaches or marinas. Dining “al fresco” is a year-long pleasure in this lovely city.
Gibraltar can be as vibrant and busy as you might expect from a metropolitan centre, or it can be as calm and as conducive to reflection as you need. A short break in Gibraltar for recharging your energy levels in January could be the perfect start for 2018.
