Spring sunshine with a promise of summer

Sunny spring day in Gibraltar

There are so many reasons for coming to visit Gibraltar, at any time of year. Even if only for a weekend, there is always so much to do, whatever your tastes. So here are some of the reasons why March 2019 is a great month to take a break in Gibraltar.

  1. Spring sunshine with a promise of summer
By March, winter is as good as over and the sunshine truly begins to warm the air. The Main Street fashion stores proudly display high-end summer fashions from some of the top designer names in the industry, and the tourists browsing these have a distinct spring in their step as they take advantage of the duty free prices.
  2. Water-side activities attract the active holiday makers
Gibraltar’s sailing schools, diving groups and adventure experience providers – busy at most times of the year – get seriously active taking groups of the more intrepid adventure lovers out into the open sea. Surfing at the coastline of our eastern beaches, stand up paddle boarding round the coast to experience some stunning views of the Rock and its awesome cave formations from the surface of the sea, exploring Gibraltar’s underwater world that is teeming with natural beauty, or taking a trip out into the Strait to sail alongside schools of playing dolphin: all of these activities are readily available to short stay visitors and tourists enjoy taking full advantage of the milder, longer days.
  3. Upper Rock tours light up for nature lovers
The Rock of Gibraltar is an iconic fortress and Upper Rock tours include visits to some of Gibraltar ancient fortifications and the more modern military installations such as O’Hara’s Battery. In March, many visitors also enjoy exposure to the Rock’s unique natural environment during their upper Rock tours. March is the time of the spring migration, and Gibraltar forms a natural roosting point for birds that have flown for thousands of miles on their trip north to breed. And we must mention the world-famous Barbary Macaques, perennially fascinating to tourists.
  4. Never mind the weather – there’s loads to do indoors
We could talk about the fine dining in Gibraltar’s excellent restaurants, relaxing beauty spas or the excitement of the night life at our clubs, casinos and live music venues, and these are all good reasons to enjoy a weekend disconnecting from the world of work and winter. But in March 2019, there’s so much more. The Gibraltar Snooker Open runs for 13th to 15th March at Gibraltar Tercentenary Sports Hall bringing with it some of the world’s top snooker talent. With superb hotel accommodation just a brief taxi ride from the venue, as well as Gibraltar’s daytime attractions and nightlife, snooker lovers are bound to love this event. And cue sports fans could think about extending their stay and watch the World Pool Masters from 29th to 31st March at the same venue.
And in between those two events, is the Gibraltar International Drama Festival, running from 18th to 23rd March. Whether you’re a regular theatre-goer or not, the Drama Festival showcases some of the best of Gibraltar’s acting and playwriting talent, and draws entries from other countries.

March in Gibraltar is not just about looking forward to summer. It stands alone as a perfect time to visit and tour the delights of our wonderful Rock.
